Verify your "data consent" choices in the Toyota app (you may be surprised).

Open the Toyota app on your phone (no need to be in your vehicle), click on the person icon in the upper right, then Account, Data Privacy.

Do you see any consent listed as accepted that you either didn't accept, or were not even asked about? Do you see something called "Drive_Pulse" and it is listed as you accepted it?

I just checked and I had that accepted. I declined that along with Insure connect.

Do you mean you declined it originally when you set up your vehicle but it instead showed up in the app as accepted, or you did actually accept it originally but now that you read what it does, you declined it?

For those that didn't read it at the time of originally setting up your car, accepting Insure Connect means data on your driving behavior--whatever arbitrary definition and thresholds they set for that--is gathered and shared with insurance companies. Drive_Pulse does the exact same with driving behavior data and was not even asked about when I set up mine originally.

If you did decline Insure Connect, you may remember they made you decline it twice before it would go through. I thought that was strange. And here they add the same thing under a different name, making a third time, but didn't seek consent on it initially. It almost makes you think someone at Toyota's bonus is tied to getting a lot of people signed up--whether knowingly or unknowingly--to permit the driving behavior data ;o).

I am sure I accepted everything as I was setting up the vehicle. After seeing your post I went back in and declined those two options. Thank you!

Same experience and settings as "Hacksaw". I denied Insurance Connect and it was still showing denied. I did not see an option to deny Drive Pulse and it was active. I went through the setup twice, one at the dealer in a rush and again a few weeks ago when one of my subscriptions was not showing. So, I think I would know if I allowed Drive Pulse. It's now denied but I'll check in the Data Protection Portal every few weeks to catch anything that shows up.

I find behavior by Toyota deceptive unless they are looking for a class action.... Maybe it was an honest mistake (yea right).

I also noticed an email notification after denying Drive Pulse.

I think its more about your vehicle sharing your driving habits, the phone as I understand it, is just the tool to turn that data snoop feature off.

This does raise another question. What it you never load the app, configure services, etc. is that even an option at the dealership. If you can do that, what is the state of privacy by default on the two data snoop options. I bet they are on.

My guess is these were accepted by the sales person when setting up my car at closing. Thanks for the reminder! Just declined Drive Pulse and Insure Connect. I already get tracked by State Farm via their beacon... wish I didn't have to but the savings are worth it

I know for sure these were not accepted as I did all the clicking on two different occasions. Either that or I missed it twice.

I could see where it would be useful to allow the vehicle owner to temporarily turn on this sort of driving behavior tracking if you took your vehicle into a shop for service (in case they go on joy rides or wreck it), or you allowed someone else to drive it. But it's apparently not set up to do that. It's either always on or always off.

"Discontinued" can mean several things. It might mean they will no longer provide updates to the software but you can continue using it and they will continue gathering/saving data, or it may mean they will uninstall the capability, delete all historic data, and it completely goes away without any action on your part, or something between those.

But if they had planned to discontinue in the "uninstall" sense, and to do so in the next couple days, why would they be enabling it for brand new vehicles like the 4runner, and to do so without out actually asking for consent? It also seems they'd have to push a firmware update to accomplish the complete uninstall (i.e. with all the code supporting it deleted/overwritten, and all saved data deleted), and to do that for every Toyota that had it. That seems unlikely, so an "in between" form of discontinuing is probably more likely, e.g., they no longer allow the driver to see the numbers, but they're still gathering and sharing under the duplicative "Insure Connect" consent.

Same for me. I made sure when I was activating not to consent to any data sharing about driving behavior. I’m livid that the drive pulse wasn’t even asked about in the setup. I bet they have a loop hole about app updates and new features using the general data consent to enable them by default. I’ve been talking to my local legislator about them drafting a law that would require any data sharing consent to be two factor. You have to consent initially then have a text message or email sent that you then verify that you consented. Honestly they should just outright ban the practice but good luck with all the money involved the politicians would lose out on campaign funds.
