Found this cabe in my SR5 that seems to be plugged into nothing above the overhead console. That socket doesn't have any cables attached to it (Just seems to be mounted to the liner with a plastic clip as to not dangle around).

Could this be for digital rear view mirror? Any ideas?

(This is not the OEM dashcam connector, that is there too on the other side).

Would love to add this option depending on cost and effort. If it does plug in, willl the software just recognize it or will it need programming at a dealership or a hack.

I will be watching.

Do the SR5s have 2 cameras in the rear or a slot for the 2nd one?

Confirmed that they do not.

This is the original camera assembly.

In the limited's you can see the camera here.

I took my back panel apart and I don't see even a hole there or anything....

I have not seen a higher trim (premium, limited, etc.) door taken apart but I would expect a hole here and some clips mounting holes too.

Did not see any obvious connectors for this either.

OEM retrofit seems like a dead end. (Which is a bit surprising, since I expected that this is an option you might be able to have the dealer install afterwards as the "tow package").

I will post what I ended up doing (close enough to OEM)... work in progress.

FWIW I find the digital rearview jarring for 2 reasons"

- I am far sighted so to my surprise when looking in a true reflection I can see distance just fine however when I turn on the digital mirror I am now looking at a screen that is close to me and items are slightly blurry.
- When looking at a regular rear view the truck bounces around while going down the road but the actual road and cars in the reflection are still stable, with the digital mirror on they now move, kinda makes me sea sick.

I thought this would be one of my favorite features, but rarely use it. I did even do a 1500 mile road trip with it on and couldn't get use to it.

Progress Update:

If I am not mistaken, Gentex is the OEM manufacture of Toyota's mirror.

I've order the GENFDM3LN...

They basically make a "Aftermarket" version of the mirror that they (very likely) also make for Toyota.

I've got the mirror installed and it basically looks flawless

I'd say it is the exact same mirror just with more 'after market' connectors.

No homelink though :/
(hoping to get my garage door opener mapped to one of the poverty switches).

Connecting the Mirror

My goal was to not mess or modify any of the original parts or wire harnesses so I also ordered the Dongar pro and tapped into the 12 V (ignition) from that adapter. I am planning on adding a dash cam too so it worked out.

You could also just top into the wires that go to that Toyota OEM dash connector.

Works well of far...

That line is there because I don't have the angle of the camera sitting well. More on that later.

Issue I am facing:

The kit assumes that you will stick the camera on the rear window. Comes with these OEM looking housings.

Only problem is that the 4runner's window rolls down.

So the current dilemma is how to mount this camera at an angle that works. Most mounted rearview cameras to the headliner clip in the 5th gen.

6th has a similar setup.... only the housing sits at an angle that is a bit too low for this

Still working on something.

A 3d printer would be really nice right about now...

Note: The camera is a 50 degree coax camera which most after market cams don't really exist in this configuration. I think GM uses these sort of connectors.

Thinking to maybe try to mount a GM OEM camera externally somehow or come up with some custom bracket for this thing that comes with the kit.

One last update incase someone is curious.

I ended up mounting the camera on the liner...

ends up looking like this.

Works alright. I'll need to make one form a thicker metal and wider since it shakes a bit over bumps. But overall not bad at all.

Total cost: $650 (Amazon is the cheapest for this kit - yes it comes with all the parts even though it isn't clearly shown on the listing). Beats the mark up on the higher trims for sure.

Good luck.

If anyone has some better mounting method or has any luck with external camera, please post.

Looks great! Does this one toggle on/off like an old school mirror with the anti glare angle? I love my Wolfbox but wish it didn’t actually come on every single time I use the vehicle. I’d rather have it off 90% of the time and on when I need it.

Yes, you can use it as a normal mirror too. Looks and feels like there is no screen

Exactly my thinking too. Will come in handy when needed.

TO be honest, you do get a bit dizzy focusing on something closer than you expect. Maybe needs some getting used to.

Aside form no home link buttons I don't think you'd be able to tell that it isn't factory.

Nicely done!
If the strange connector you found is #X19 in this diagram, Toyota says it’s a noise cancellation microphone? There's also a harness in that area for the sunroof ECU, and just some other junction connector🤷‍♂️
