Ram 1500 EV Will Offer a Range Extender Gas Engine, CEO Confirms

Ram 1500 REV Ram 1500 EV Will Get Range Extender (Gas Engine) Option, CEO Confirms -concept-11-1672776656.jpg?crop=1.00xw:0.749xh;0,0

  • Ram CEO Mike Koval Jr. says the Ram 1500 EV will offer a range extender, as first reported by evpulse.com.
  • A range extender is a combustion engine that can recharge the truck's battery, and it's currently not an option on other EV trucks.
  • Ford has already patented a bed-mounted range extender for the electric F-150, so Ram isn't the first to think of the idea.
UPDATE 1/5/23: Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares confirmed the range-extender powertrain option for the upcoming Ram 1500 EV during a roundtable interview at CES 2023. While the Ram Revolution BEV concept is battery-powered EV, there will also be a version of this pickup offered with a gasoline engine that can recharge the battery.

By the time the Ram 1500 EV hits the market in 2024, it'll be a couple of years late to the all-electric-pickup-truck party that's already getting started. However, it could arrive with an available range extender, which is not currently an option on rivals such as the F-150 Lightning, the GMC Hummer EV, or the Rivan R1T.

Ram CEO Mike Koval Jr. first mentioned that the upcoming Ram 1500 EV will be offered with a range extender in an interview with EV Pulse. Powering a generator that can recharge the truck's battery pack, it might help alleviate concerns some people have about driving range. It's perhaps a hedge for buyers of electric trucks who plan on using them to tow, as it significantly affects efficiency and range. We've seen the Rivian R1T's range shrink to just 110 miles when towing a modest load just half of the truck's 11,000-pound maximum.

Of course, a Ram 1500 EV with a range extender is no longer an EV, but a plug-in hybrid. Then again, Ram hasn't had an issue with calling its V-8 a Hemi despite not having hemispherical combustion chambers, so maybe it will still label its electrified 1500 an EV. While we haven't heard of any other new electric trucks that'll offer a range extender, it's unlikely that Ram would be the only company to have one if it's an effective solution. In fact, Ford in 2018 filed a patent for a bed-mounted range extender for what we now know is the F-150 Lightning. However, Ford's patent was for a modular unit versus one that's built-in like the one used on BMW's now-defunct i3 hatch. The i3's two-cylinder engine was a pure range extender, used only to recharge the battery, but there's a host of plug-in hybrids with lesser electric range where the gas engine also provides propulsion, such as the Chevy Volt or any number of today's plug-in hybrids. Koval didn't say what type of range extender would be used or when it might be available.

The news about the Ram 1500 EV's range extender comes after the brand recently announced an initiative to gather input from real people regarding the development of its electric trucks and commercial vans via RamRevolution.com and a yearlong series of events called the Ram Real Talk Tour.

Well, that brings the Ram 1500 EV to the top of my list as I plan to tow an vintage Airstream with it and a range extender would allow me to drive it to Alaska or through Montana and the Dakotas without fear of running out to juice. The ability to add Dino juice to it will be awesome. My Chevy Volt has been doing this for nearly a decade.

Does it mean the engine is going to be for charging the battery, like a generator? Can I drive on it if my battery is dead?

I don’t know how I feel about this just yet. On one hand it would be nice for range, but on the other it adds a second complicated system and maintenance back into the equation. I’ve only had the Rivian for a few weeks, but range hasn’t been an issue. I just got home from my first towing trip down the Oregon coast and while we did have to charge twice along the route it worked out well and didn’t have to unhook to charge. It’s also very nice to be able to charge overnight at the campground.

We averaged 1.26 mile/kW.

what size battery do you have, and how much did the estimated range drop due to towing a camper?

I think the battery is 135kWh with 125 useable. The trailer cuts our range in half. 120-140 miles on a full charge. I prefer to not charge over 80% since the charging slows so much above that. On the west coast chargers are a little more abundant so this range is doable.

That is kind of what I expected in range. I'm toying with getting the max pack with a Rivian, alas I really want the R1S with a max pack, but I understand it is only available for the Truck. I guess max pack won't fit in the shorter R1S. Too bad RIvian didn't make a suburban sized R1S. It is more like a Tahoe.

Coming this fall…..….they announced duel motor max pack for R1S.

I think I will change to Ram 1500 EV because it has so many outstanding features. But how many miles can the Ram's battery last? Is there information about 2 miles/kW? Previously, I used a gasoline pickup truck and installed best cold air intake, but it used too much fuel, so I need advice to switch to RAM EV.

Welp, here I am; back in the Ram forum after Tesla fell abysmally short of the 500+ mile range promise I waited impatiently for 4 years for. Too bad I released my preorder for this already, like an idiot.

Anyway, have we heard any more news on the delivery date of this vehicle, pricing, and the gas range extender option? I see now there is a "Ramcharger" model with a 92kw battery and a 130kw generator. Seems like a small battery. Does that mean the generator basically runs the whole time? Wouldn't that just be an expensive and unnecessarily weird and complicated ICE truck? 690 seems like an incredible range, but gauging the efficiency is hard. How much gas will it use? Is it loud?

Honestly, if battery tech isn't ready for decent range, why not just make PHEV's that have way more range than just 25 miles? Give me a 300 mile range PHEV with a turbo-charged i4 under the hood and 12 gallon tank for an extra 300 mile range and let's call it a day.

They say goal is end of 2024 for the 1500 rev and early 2025 for the RamCharger variant. I'd guess they will be a little late like everything else. I'm interested in prices, but also the V2G and V2H options. Those are possible on the f150ev, but it's proven to be difficult & expensive to get installers and chargers etc needed to make it all work.

I read everything I could find today, the ramcharger small battery is said to provide 150 mile range electric use only, and so math tells me there's 540 miles range from the 27 gallon gas tank + generator (they hope for 690 miles total range). The gas charger/turbine will be in the frunk area. Only the 1500 rev will have an accessible frunk.
  • It's surprising that 27 gallons of gas converted to electricity gets you 540 miles, but that is only 20 mpg so that's very possible in a normal truck.
